Mike Caddies in Zach's Win at John Deere Classic
July 15th 2012 - Zach Johnson earns his ninth PGA Tour victory today at the John Deere Classic in Silvis, IL and it was the first time in his career that he had his long-time coach Mike Bender caddieing for him.
It was a thrilling playoff with Zach making birdie on the second hole after nearly holing out from the fairway bunker. The win was very important to Johnson who grew up nearby and has repeatedly said the John Deere is his "5th Major"
After Johnson and Matteson double-bogeyed the 18th on their first playoff hole, Johnson hit a 193-yard second shot from a bunker to 12 inches, again on the 18th. Matteson needed to sink a 43-footer to match Johnson's birdie, but didn't get the putt to the hole.
It was Johnson's second win of the season.
Johnson birdied three of the last six holes in regulation, taking the lead until Matteson sank a 60-foot eagle putt on the par-5 17th. Johnson shot a bogey-free 6-under 65 to finish at 20-under 264.
Congratulations to both Zach and Mike on a thrilling win and everyone at the academy wishes Zach the best of luck at this weeks Open Championship.
