Byrd Wins Second in a Row
JANUARY 9, 2011, KAPALUA, Hawaii -- Jonathan Byrd had a silver trophy at his side and a lei draped around his neck, a winner Sunday in the Tournament of Champions, even if the playoff didn't end the way anyone imagined. The emotions went beyond his victory in the PGA TOUR's season opener when Robert Garrigus, the biggest hitter on TOUR, missed a 3-foot par putt on the second extra hole at Kapalua. Just over three months ago, Byrd thought he might lose his card for the first time in his career. He was outside the top 125 on the money list, and not much was going his way. Then came a hole-in-one in near darkness to win Las Vegas in a playoff, getting him to Maui for the Tournament of Champions. He made it two straight wins by closing with a 6-under 67, and winning in the playoff. "I can't sit here and not think about where I was toward the end of the season last year, fighting for my card," he said. "I'm just thankful, I'm overwhelmed, I'm grateful, all of the above." Mike Bender is Jonathan's Swing Coach and everyone at the Mike Bender Golf Academy congratulates Jonathan on his continued great play. This was the 15th victory on the major professional golf tours by Mike's students. :: continue »

MBGA Named Among Top 25 Golf Schools in America
GOLF Magazine announced in its November 2008 issue that the Mike Bender Golf Academy at Timacuan Golf Club in Lake Mary, Florida has been named one of the Top 25 Golf Schools in America. This is the only national ranking of golf schools. The magazine highlighted in its article why golfers should go to the Mike Bender Golf Academy by saying the academy’s “highly trained staff provides off-the-charts attention to small groups.” In fact, unlike many of the other schools on the magazine’s list, the Mike Bender Golf Academy actually custom tailors a golf school program for each participant based on length and intensity requested, individual weaknesses and the golfer’s general skill level. Schools are available year-round at the academy and can include personal instruction with Bender, who is ranked among the “Top 10 Greatest Instructors in America” by Golf Digest magazine. Cheryl Anderson, the academy’s director of instruction and 2006 LPGA National Teacher of the Year, and Elliot Gealy also teach the academy’s school programs for individuals and small groups. The criteria used in the GOLF Magazine evaluation process included:• Breadth of Programs• Student-to-teacher ratio. The smaller, the better.• Technology. The panel favored schools that applied advanced technologies (video analysis, 3-D modeling and launch monitors) into their lessons plans.• Instruction Quantity. The more the better. Schools that spent more time on the practice tee were favored over those that split time between practice and play. • Facilities/Accommodations. The Panel awarded schools with state-of-the-art practice facilities with the complete range of full-swing, short-game and putting practice areas.• Staff experience. Staffs led by more knowledgeable and experienced teachers were favored over those that employ even a partial percentage of non-PGA or LPGA teaching professionals. The Mike Bender Golf Academy is one of the finest golf learning facilities in the world and is the training base to many top touring professionals including 2007 Masters champion, Zach Johnson, two-time U.S. Open champion Lee Janzen and multiple LPGA Tour winner Seon Hwa Lee. The facilities include a one-of-a-kind pitching practice facility, the MEGSA Perfect Practice Equipment training bays and a newly expanded teaching building with the latest video analysis technology. Bender and Anderson Named Among Greatest Teachers in Golf Digest
Lake Mary, FL, July 7, 2009 – The golf industry's most exclusive list of top teaching talent has been issued today by Golf Digest Magazine as it unveils its biennial list of America's 50 Greatest Teachers for 2009-10 in its August issue. Among those named to the new list is Mike Bender, owner of The Mike Bender Golf Academy headquartered at Timacuan G.C. in Lake Mary, FL. Bender has been on the Golf Digest list since its inception in 2000 and has steadily climbed from No. 37 to his new ranking at No. 9. Joining Bender on Golf Digest’s Best Teachers in Your State list are Mike Bender Golf Academy Director of Instruction, Cheryl Anderson at No. 32. Bender is No. 3 in the Florida rankings out of the thousands of golf instructors who call the state home."This is a special honor because it means your peers respect your work as a teacher," said Bender. "I've been a competitor and teacher for nearly four decades and I can say that being considered among the top 10 teachers by the industry means as much to me as anything else I've accomplished in the game. I love to teach and I’m very excited about where the academy is headed and the extremely positive results we’ve seen with our students." As Bender has achieved worldwide recognition as a teacher who gets students to make significant improvement in their games, golf’s top players have sought out his advice. Zach Johnson, 2007 Masters Champion and six-time winner on the PGA Tour, has trained with Mike since Johnson was launching his professional career on the mini-tours at the beginning of the decade. LPGA four-time tournament winner Seon Hwa Lee and rookie sensation Vicki Hurst also have been working with Mike for years. More recently, PGA Tour veterans, including Jonathan Byrd, Mark Hensby, Robert Damron and two-time U.S. Open champion Lee Janzen, have put their faith in Mike. All told, Bender has helped more than two-dozen PGA, Champions and LPGA Tour professionals with their games. Many of these professionals have a high comfort level with Mike because they know he has been in their shoes. Bender was a three-time NCAA All-American (1978-1980) and two-time NCAA Division III individual champion (1979-1980) before spending three seasons on the PGA Tour from 1987-89. He began teaching after leaving the Tour and has been at Timacuan since 1991. Recently he opened satellite academies at Stoneybrook East and Stoneybrook West in metropolitan Orlando along with Mike Bender Elite Golf Academies at Sarabande CC in Howey-in-the-Hills, FL and in Seoul, South Korea. These Elite Golf Academies are for competitive junior, collegiate and young professional players who want a world-class, full-time training program that used Bender’s proven techniques for building champion golfers.Bender is also well known for his creation of the MEGSA Perfect Practice Equipment, a revolutionary training station that is used by thousands of amateurs and top professionals including 2007 major winners Johnson and Morgan Pressel. Since the first survey in 2000, Golf Digest has used peer voting on the state and national level to build the Best Teacher lists. This year's list was selected by more than 1,000 teachers from all 50 states who filled out an online ballot. There are more than 30,000 golf professionals in the United States who were eligible for consideration. :: continue »

Bender Again Named to Top 100
NEW YORK, JANUARY 15, 2009—GOLF MAGAZINE, the world’s most widely-read golf publication, recently added eight new instructors to its Top 100 Teachers list for 2009-2010 published in the magazine’s new February issue. He currently coaches many of the game’s top professionals including 2009 Sony Open champion Zach Johnson, Jonathan Byrd, Mark Hensby, Lee Janzen and LPGA star Seon Hwa Lee.Over the past 15 years, GOLF MAGAZINE’S Top 100 Teachers list has become the industry gold standard, not only because it was the first such list ever issued, but because of the diligent selection process that GOLF MAGAZINE created to assemble the list. Every two years, the magazine starts from scratch to determine the best 100 teachers in the nation.More than 800 nominations are accepted from among 32,000 golf professionals. Each nominee must complete a thorough questionnaire. The final decision to include a teacher among the Top 100 is made by GOLF MAGAZINE’s instruction editors based upon a combination of 10 criteria including: swing knowledge, communications skills, innovative teaching ideas, flexibility in teaching different learning types, proven success, willingness to share knowledge with peers, longevity, success with well-known golfers, number of nominations/recommendations and industry awards. :: continue »
